Our Academic and Arts Night was a joyful celebration of learning, creativity, and community. Families explored classrooms filled with hands-on activities, from designing nests to protect a Peep to carefully stacking eggs with play dough, challenges that sparked both problem-solving and laughter. Student artwork proudly lined the walls, showcasing the talent and effort of our learners, while visits with Mrs. Stevens in the music room added a lively, musical touch to the evening.
We were also grateful to welcome community partners, including the Somerset Wood Trustees, Aspire River Hawks, and Canaan Public Library, who shared valuable resources and opportunities with our families. A special highlight for many students was creating a snack alongside Assistant Principal, Mrs. Madore and Administrator Assistant, Miss. Amy. It was a wonderful night that truly reflected the strong connection between our school, families, and community.

During intervention time, our first graders are busy adding 2-digit numbers and thinking carefully, “Does it make a ten?” ✨ This strategy is helping them build strong number sense and getting them ready to tackle regrouping and even bigger math challenges in second grade! 🚀📚

Imaginary play on the playground today was full of creativity and big dreams! Students took on roles in an ice cream shop, became future engineers, and even explored what it’s like to be a Maine driver (that poor deer!) It was wonderful to see their imaginations at work!

During Mrs. Whittemore’s 2nd grade Illustrative Math lesson, students worked to describe the attributes of solid shapes without revealing the shape’s name. It proved to be quite a challenge and harder than it looks!

First graders have been busy getting into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit! As part of their learning, students enjoyed listening to the Magic Tree House Book, Leprechauns in Late Winter where they explored Ireland and its traditions, including the story of the Shee and the old folklore of leprechauns.

Excitement grew all week as students eagerly anticipated a leprechaun visit. With the help of their families, they designed and built creative leprechaun traps at home, each one more imaginative than the last. When the big day arrived, there were plenty of signs that leprechauns had been near and to everyone’s delight, the pots of gold had magically turned into candy!

It was a fun and engaging way to combine literacy, culture, and a little bit of magic in first grade. 🍀

Friday Fun Day in First Grade! 😁🦷 Students explored good dental habits such as brushing twice a day and choosing foods that help keep teeth strong. We also discussed which foods can cause cavities when eaten too often. As part of our literacy work, students wrote step‑by‑step directions for how to brush their teeth and learned about the double “oo” sound (as in tooth). Each child received a new toothbrush and a small packet of toothpaste to take home. We wrapped up the day with fun tooth fairy stories, along with a take‑home book that connected the tooth fairy to money, coins, and their values, using rhyme to solve riddles.

In first grade, we connected the real-life skill of counting money to our understanding of place value and adding numbers. Students practiced counting collections of coins in a variety of ways, including through games, “purchasing” classroom items, solving word problems, and completing coin-counting worksheets. Through these activities, children gained a deeper understanding of numbers, place value and how math is used in real-life situations.

Congratulations to our Core Value Students of the Month for Respect! Every month, our Core Value Students of the Month get to enjoy a pizza party with Assistant Principal, Mrs. Madore. These students show respect each day through their kind words, helpful actions, and the way they treat their classmates, teachers, and school community. Second graders in Mrs. Whittemore's class are performing a little “surgery” in reading! 🩺📚 After completing Text Features Medical School earlier in the week, students reviewed their patient files to prepare for surgery day. Their patients’ symptoms? A need for text features! Students are using what they learned to diagnose and “treat” their patients by identifying and using the correct text features.

Mrs. Galison’s kinders had a fun, busy week! They enjoyed several Dr. Seuss read-alouds and activities, including practicing rhyming words and creating their own “-at” word family Cat in the Hat. They also had fun sorting and graphing colored Goldfish crackers. In our K for ME curriculum, students are learning about owls and wrapped up the week by creating these beautiful mosaic owls! 🦉📚
